How to Reverify a Domain in Google Search Console

If you’ve recently changed your DNS settings, migrated hosting providers, or made structural updates to your site, you might need to reverify your domain in Google Search Console. Domain verification is essential to maintain access to valuable insights and ensure your site is properly indexed by Google.

Why Reverify?

Google may lose access to your site if:

  • Your DNS TXT record was deleted or overwritten.
  • You changed your hosting or domain provider.
  • You removed the HTML file or tag used for verification.

How to Reverify Your Domain

1. Log in to Google Search Console

Go to Google Search Consolde and log in with the same Google account used to verify the domain initially.

2. Check the Property Status

If your domain property is unverified, it will show a “Verification failed” message. Click on the property to view more details.

3. Choose a Verification Method

Google offers several options:

  • DNS TXT Record (recommended for domain properties)
    • Go to your domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare).
    • Add a TXT record with the value provided by Google.
  • HTML File or Meta Tag (for URL-prefix properties)
    • Reupload the HTML file to your site’s root directory.
    • Or reinsert the meta tag in the <head> section of your homepage.

4. Click “Verify”

After you’ve added the verification method back in place, return to Search Console and click the “Verify” button. If everything is set correctly, you’ll regain access.

Keep your verification method intact to avoid future issues. For domain-level properties, the DNS TXT record is the most reliable and persistent option.
